Sometimes called musculoskeletal disorder or MSD, musculoskeletal injuries refer to soft tissue damage that may result from unbalanced posture, force, sudden impact, repetitive motion, or vibration. Soft tissues (ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, and tendons) are present in various areas of the body, including the joints, neck, and lower back. There are different types of musculoskeletal injuries, and symptoms often vary from person to person. However, symptoms like fatigue, pain, and difficulty sleeping are common. Below are three types of MSDs:

Tendinitis. Also called tendonitis, tendinitis refers to the inflammation of a tendon. It often results from overuse of the tendon, or injury from a sports trauma or other accidents. Common symptoms are redness, pain, heat, and swelling in the affected area.

Ligament sprain. Ligament sprain refers to damage to a ligament (tissue that connects two or more bones to a joint). It may occur when the joint is suddenly forced out of its usual range of motion, and may sometimes be mistaken for fracture if severe.

Muscle strain. Sometimes referred to as a pulled muscle, muscle strain happens when a muscle is torn or overstretched. It is more common in the muscles of the shoulder, neck, lower back, and hamstring, and can cause pain and limited movement in affected areas.
